If you’re one of our readers who has marveled incredulously at the meteoric rise of Mansur Gavriel‘s simple, traditional bags, some new research may help explain the phenomenon a little more clearly. According to a studyperformed by NPD Group and e-commerce firm Stylitics, younger consumers are much less interested in big, traditional luxury brands than their older bag-shopping counterparts.
The two companies set out to determine what influences young consumers to invest in a new bag, and according to their results, the way millennial shoppers view buying a new bag “seems closer to buying a car than to buying clothing.” Consumers under 35 do more preliminary research, much of it on social media, retail sites and elsewhere on the Internet, before purchasing either online or in a brick-and-mortar store, and that’s true regardless of price point.
Perhaps the most interesting finding, according to Fashionista, is that millennial shoppers listed quality and style as the most important factors in their handbag-purchasing decisions, which outpaced the rate at which older shoppers favored those criteria. As Fashionista points out, that leaves a wide-open space for brands with little name recognition but a strong value proposition to win customers, and that’s good news for buyers of all ages.

A sure fire way to make me feel like I’ve been doing this for a really long time, is realizing that my first Bottega Veneta bag I bought after I started PurseBlog was in 2007 on a trip to Venice, Italy. Another way to realize we’ve grown a lot is checking out the pictures we took of that bag – those few pics were taken by Vlad and I think we can all agree his photography has also evolved quite a bit!
When I started PurseBlog, I really started delving into handbags and researching brands to learn more. I immediately fell for Bottega Veneta and the brands beautifully made products. I loved the meticulous attention to detail, the intrecciato and the beyond divine leather that’s used. I’ve been a part of not one but two special orders (here and here) and always had a very special place in my heart for the brand.
I think it’s easy to sometimes get lured away from the classics into the what’s new and trendy, but I never want to forget Bottega Veneta. A couple weeks ago, Bottega Veneta launched a new shape for the house, the Bottega Veneta Bucket Bag. Tomas Maier designed this bag with intrecciato nappa leather which is finished with smooth leather drawstrings with metal loops and chain. The bag is rather slender though the interior has plenty of space with smartphone and zip pockets and is lined in suede. Just like most bags that I love, this bag comes with an adjustable and detachable shoulder strap along with the double handles which allows for cross-body or over the shoulder wear. The Bucket Bag is available in Nero (black), Pacific (deep blue), Vesuvio (orange), and Peony (pink). The price on this bag is really reasonable especially for the quality that Bottega Veneta provides – $3,550 via Bottega Veneta and the Madison Avenue Bottega Veneta store.

Let's get this out of the way up top: the bag that made the biggest debut on the Dior Spring 2016 runway is going to remind you of the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour in certain ways, which, in turn, already reminds many of you (and me) of the Hermès Birkin. Or, at least it does as presented on the runway.
The design struck me as a curious choice (even though it's as beautifully finished as any other Dior bag), but when you look closely at the detail shots, the bag appears to be a little more complicated than it was presented. Based on the photos, all of the bags closures are magnet-based, with a top flap that was folded back (and presumably held that way by another set of magnets on the bag's rear) on all the versions the models carried.
A top flap (or at least the one I'm imagining) would make the bag more reminiscent of a Birkin than a Sac de Jour, but there's no telling until we get to see the bag in all its glory. Take a look at it, as well as the other new additions to the Dior lineup, below.
